Crushing 1 obsidian block gives an obsidian powder and has 75% chance to give back the obsidian block. By cycling the obsidian block through the crushing process until it's consumed, it will give an average 4 powdered obsidian per obsidian block, although the results can vary a lot (between 1 and 8 usually).
